Mental Fitness first

Mental Health and Fitness are terms that get bandied about like nobody's business these days, and the two terms seem interchangeable, but that couldn't be further from the truth, and it can be so easily proven, you'll be shocked how "in-your-face" it is!

Mental Fitness contributes to Mental Health - good or bad!

If your mental fitness is poor, your overall mental health will be poor as a direct result, there are no two ways about it! So, what is Mental Fitness and how is it different to our everyday 'overall' Mental "Health"?

The first thing to do is define what Mental "Health" is, before delving into the Mental Fitness side of things. And believe it or not, poor Mental Health does not mean illness, nor does it mean that a person should be stigmatised or shunned for raising their voice when struggling, they are not weak, for doing so. In actual fact, it takes immense strength to admit to one's self they need help or aren't 100% on any particular day.

The World Health Organisation Defines Mental health as: 'A state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community.'

Why is this important?

The answer is simple really. A person's overall mindset and "Mental Health" will affect their performance in any capacity in life and as a direct result, where other people are involved in the train of "activity", the 'team' performance will be directly affected, and if the mental state of any one person is not optimal, the results will be poor to say the least.

Some medical professionals and fitness advocates will preach that keeping physical fit and eating right and clean is the key to a successful everyday life to combat poor Mental Health states like depression and grief, and there is 'some' truth to this, but the person affected must also work on their Mental 'Fitness' to enable them to embrace tools like Physical Fitness and Clean Eating.

Mental Fitness is not just a mindset, like anything that is worth doing in life it takes practice, method and discipline to get right and achieve results from.

Techniques like 'Mindfulness' and 'Meditation' are useful but not always necessary, in actual fact, just having a checklist of simple tasks in our heads to do and complete first thing when we get up in the morning (or evening) helps to set the tone for a good state of Mental 'Fitness' that gives us the correct mindset to complete simple and arduous tasks just the same because we learn to develop a keen sense of 'self-knowing'.

There is so much more to 'team work', 'physical fitness', 'mental fitness' and 'performance' than meets the eye, and it all starts with 'Mental Fitness' first: Get the "mind" right, and everything else will fall into place, slowly but surely, and only then can we start to measure the results!
